If the property you've chosen doesn't offer a "Do Not Disturb" door sign that specifically indicates a pet's presence in the guestroom, bring along your own. Even properties with an impeccable track record of communication could have a lapse and you wouldn't want your pet to slip out if someone entered the room without knowing your pet was there.

• Even before recent world events imposed additional travel restrictions, airlines' policies concerning pet travel were subject to frequent change. It's best to check individual air carriers' web sites or call their toll-free numbers for the most up-to-date information.

• If your personal veterinarian isn't in a position to recommend a local animal hospital and/or after-hours clinic, just in case your pet isn't acting like himself or an emergency arises, ask your pet-friendly innkeeper if he feels comfortable making a recommendation.

• Carry a current health certificate to indicate that your pet's inoculations are up-to-date in case it's required for interstate travel.

• If your pet is taking medicine, have plenty on hand.

• Bring along your pet's favorite toys or security blanket for a homier feel and to reduce the stress of unfamiliar surroundings.

• Try and retain as much of your pet's normal/daily routine as possible.
